ABOUT
The Nogai people are descendants of the Golden Horde living in the Southern Caucasus of Russia. They experience issues of language loss, identity loss, and their steppe is turning into a desert. Gulfira and her team are trying to save their land by planting branches of Juzgun - a shrub with long roots that can stop the sand. Will Gulfira survive in this battle for the homeland or will the Nogai land disappear along with its people?
DIRECTOR
TATYANA SOBOLEVA
Film director and producer. She was born in Moscow. In the 1990s she studied theatre and philosophy at the Slavic Institute, drama at the Gorky Literary Institute, and feature film directing at the Institute of Modern Art (workshop by V.D. Rubinchik). In 2004 she graduated from VGIK with a degree in non-fiction film directing. In the following years Tatiana Soboleva directed more than 20 documentary films, which successfully participated in international and Russian film festivals and won awards. Twice her films were nominated for the Russian National Award "Laurel Branch". In 2017 Tatyana became a participant of Berlinale Talents. Tatyana regularly runs trainings in documentary filmmaking as a part of creative residencies in various regions of Russia. She is a curator of the business program and a member of the selection committee of the MIDF DockerFest, founder of the film studio "Dostoevsky Doc", and a member of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia. Among recent directed films: “Against the Wind” (2024), “Lewis Carroll's Journey Through the Mirror and What He Found There” (2023), “Motherland” (2021), “Russian Way” (2021).
