The Mexican landscape fades away, fragmented, defaced and scorched. Forests are stripped bare, rivers diverted. Raised barbed wire fences divide the land while people are silenced and killed - here, necropolitics reign supreme. Mexico has the highest number of defenders of the land assassinated.

In 2002, “The Last Meal”, a dive into the absurd and the horror of Huntsville, Texas, capital of the death penalty in the USA will be the first feature film by Julien Elie. After several years away from cinema, he directed “Dark Suns” in 2018. For the epic journey into the heart of the wave of violence that is hitting Mexico he has won a dozen awards (CPH DOX, BAFICI, Filmfest Hamburg, Nashville Film Festival, etc.) and been presented at numerous festivals. Released in 2023, “La Guardia Blanca” is his second feature film shot in Mexico.
